The Rainbow Bridge Story
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal who has been especially close to someone dies, that pet goes to the Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food and water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
Animals who were ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them from days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one thing: they miss someone very special to them; the person they left behind.
All of the animals run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to break away from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. Happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together…

Mable ATB 1/1/2010
With sadness and a broken heart I write this.
We had to help our Beloved Mable to the bridge at 1:57 PM today.
One of the hardest things we have ever had to do!
We are so full of emotion, emptiness and sorrow.
We only had Mable with us for just over two years. She was a stray that wondered into our home on December 28, 2007.
Ken fell deeply in love this beautiful little lady. Mable was/is Ken's baby.
I wonder why/how we couldn't help but to love her so deeply?
Mable was always the perfect lady.... Always with a Happy Tail.
Her voice, her love, her smile, her faithfulness, her loyalty, her freckles, her sillyness, her sunshine will always be apart of the most wonderful two years we shared with our little baby girl Mable for the rest of our lives.
We will miss her more then words could ever express.
The "Bridge" shines a little brighter today because our sunshine Mable is there.
Mable, Daddy and Mommy love and all ready miss you.
Don't be scared, we will always love you and miss you. Wait for us, look for us, we will be there with you again.

My Angel you are truly an Angel now.
Angel you are a one of a kind.
You were my special friend full of pure love.
You were a lover not a fighter.
Angel you lived life to the fullest everyday.
You loved everyone you met.
My sweet Angel you were a special gift from Heaven.
You were the light of my life and truly always will be.
It was tough for you when your Brother BJ left you to go to the bridge.
But you manged to go on for almost two years knowing he was watching over you. Your special spot on the couch is now empty and my heart is breaking as I had to send you back to Heaven to join your brother B.J. and grandfather Bubba. They came for you on Sept 19, 2009 and said it was time for you to go be with them and you told me you had to leave so I let you go so you could be cancer and pain free and be with your brother and grandfather. I know they will take care of you.
Angel you will always have a special spot in my heart.
My memories of us together will always be cherished.
I know you are safe with your brother B.J. and Grandfather Bubba and you are all flying cancer and pain free and we will all meet again until then I know you will be watching over me and the other hounds
You are missed so much
I love you sweet girl

Oliver (keeping watch over his sister Hannah as always)
Oliver & Hannah, his sister came to SBR about 2 years ago, from a family who was moving to the far East to work. They were "older", a bonded pair. I loved to foster the seniors, especially pairs. What a wonderful pair! starting to slow a bit, but Hannah, oh how she would talk talk talk! (I gave her the nickname Chatty Cathy") Oliver just sat back, quiet as a church mouse - couldn't get a word in edgewise anyway! At the Sweetheart Waddle 2009 on my birthday, I adopted them.
Everywhere, together we would go - Hannah always beside Oliver, just checking, and then apart for just a little while, but never out of eyesight...they got spoiled, they got fluffy beds, they got treats, , we'd walk 4 blocks to visit with Auntie Pat, our 80 year old friend, they walked up the special ramp to their places on the bed Ethel in the curve of my knee, Hannah at my midsection, and Oliver- all of us, somehow, "touching" one another- Ollie coming in at the top giving me goodnight kisses and making sure all of his "gurls" were tucked in for the night.
He was the sentry, loved to sit by the glass front door and watch happenings on the street, and to announce visitors. One day he really started barking ferociously at the door. I came and found a salesman for ADT security systems! I suggested to him that I had the BEST security system love could buy... While I worked in my office, whether day or night (or early early morning) Oliver moved to my feet and kept my toesies warm.
We went to the dog park for walks, sniffs and meets and greets with many canine friends and their people. We went to the Waddle, we went to The Georgia Bash, and Maryland for the BROOD Ramble - our pawticipation in hound rescue and to see another State in this beautiful country of ours. Oliver loved to ride, and would not give up his shotgun front seat to Hannah- the only time he "held his ground". Hannah whimpered all the way to Maryland and back...she didn't like to ride we discovered...but she would sit on the back seat and watch out the back window, as long as she could see Oliver.
Four weeks ago, Oliver became lethargic, Breathing with difficulty - fever - and a blood test revealed...Lyme disease! But even after two weeks of medication, he still couldn't breathe and his abdomen became hugely distended. Took him to the UF vet school- the news was devastating - huge cancer throughout his spleen, kidneys and spreading rapidly, so organs were pushed up into his diaphragm so he couldn't breathe. The prognosis was grim, angiosarcoma - quality of life poor so we made the ultimate decision as it should be, sending Oliver to The Bridge - very peacefully fell asleep in my arms. Hannah and I are trying to adjust - Hannah searches for her soulmate- I tell her he is watching over us, she cries.
You are loved my Ollie boy - and oh so missed - you will always hold a special place in my heart dearest houndie of mine.

I wanted to inform you that our sweet boy, Tank, whom we adopted a little over three years ago, has passed away today. He was starting not to eat, we took him to the vet who said he had pneumonia. We gave him his meds, but he still did not get better. We took him back and the doctor said he had a tumor in his belly and he was suffering. We let him go to sleep today. He is now with all of his favorite toys and in God's hands with my mom (who passed away June 14th). We will miss him greatly. He was one of the sweetest dogs we have ever had and we tell everyone where we got him from. I even had a basset's picture on my fax cover sheets at work with your web site on it.
Thank you for giving Tank and us the most wonderful three years of our lives.

We adopted Dixie at the end of January 2002 when she was 11 months old. My husband went to see her at a groomer in Oviedo where she was staying with her foster Mom. I called from work to see what she looked like and my husband said "she looks like she's in the car". She was a very sweet girl who still loved to play with all of her toys even after she went totally blind from glaucoma two years ago. Her favorite toys were ones that squeaked. She would follow you around squeaking out what we called her "morse code".
Thank you Suncoast for placing Dixie in our home. Rest in peace GirlyGirl!!

Lauralie, 16, fell for Elway immediately. She was helping out in the adoption tent on Valentine's Day, 2009 at the Sweetheart Waddle. Lauralie could see that Elway needed some TLC. He was so grouchy, so she quickly took him away to sit under a tree and regain his composure. (He never did!) That poor boy, just two and a half years old, was so afraid and confused. His owners had relinquished him to SBR the day before. Before he knew it he was in a different world that he didn’t understand or care to know. We took Elway home to foster, despite the doubts, and soon learned his fate. Elway suffered from severe and inoperable deformities, deformities the vet said she would attribute to irresponsible breeding. His hind quarters were terribly malformed and his temperament was unpredictable at best, and sometimes violent, but we loved him. Especially Lauralie. For four months Elway ruled the roost in our home and we all made accommodations for him to be as comfortable and as happy as was possible. When he was sweet he was the sweetest. When he was hungry, which was all of the time, he was the hungriest. When he wanted to play it was priceless! Because of the condition of his back legs Elway hopped like a bunny when he got excited and playful. It was a sight to see! I only hope my family will laugh again soon and we can enjoy Elway's memory. The decision for him to go to the bridge was unpopular and extremely difficult. My thanks to Karen Young. I wouldn’t have known what to do without Karen’s compassion, wisdom and rational thoughtfulness. Thank you for providing us the opportunity to have Elway in our lives, even though the time was too brief. Elway, we will always remember you, your endless drool, the sad sound of whimpering in your sleep, those soulful eyes, and that remarkably soft fur on your chest. You changed our lives forever and we love you. The Fran Bradford family June, 2009 |

We adopted Boo Bear from Suncoast June of 2002, he was 9 years old. He had the longest ears and the most crooked teeth I had ever seen and absolutely beautiful! He ran around the yard with his head held high wagging his tail and just loved life! He lay in the sun with the wind in his face and smelled the world! He kept us warm at night and made us laugh every day.
Boo left our world February 2008. He was a loved family member! Thank you Suncoast! Kim Frawley

My wife Linda & I rescued our basset from Suncoast October 2001. Augie was 8 years, 8 months. She was diagnosed with kidney failure just 2 weeks ago. We took her back home and did dialysis on her twice a day along with her meds & special diet. To no avail poor Augie was suffering terribly. It broke our hearts to have to put her to sleep. Linda & I were at her side when she was put to sleep. It was very fast & painless.
Augie left behind her basset brothers & sisters, Huckleberry, Annie, Harley & Grace a border collie. All our dogs were rescued. They all are melancholia & miss Augie. Augie loved everyone, even up to her last minutes her tail waged for us letting us know it was ok. We miss her very much, until we see her again.
Our son Paul Jr. age 28 passed away 12/31/07. When we get Augie's ashes back we are going to put them at our son's grave site. Augie was Paul's favorite. Thank you for letting us share.
sincerely, Paul & Linda Wolynic

We want to express our most sincere appreciation to Karen and all the volunteers who made possible our brief but wonderful experience with Barney. The compassion and interest shown by all the family at Suncoast Basset Rescue was remarkable and worthy of admiration. It was one of the gifts Barney gave us, to allow us to interact with your organization. Barney was a little angel who came to our lives for a short period of time and left long lasting memories and great feelings in our hearts. We met Barney right before the thanksgiving holiday and with his playfulness stole our hearts. He was always very obedient. He showed us how to be thankful for what we have and not take it for granted. Christmas was a little sad because he was already sick, but left us a great image, we will remember him as our “Dear Santa”. God only knows if he had him to teach us something or if he wanted us to give Barney love and warmth in his last days.
Hey little buddy, today as you cross the bridge, the pain will stay behind and no longer you will suffer, we know God will love your company as much as we did. We will always remember you.

Our hearts are breaking as we write this story. Our baby girl Tillie has crossed the Rainbow Bridge on December 17, 2008. She became a part of our family in July 2005. She brought so much joy to our household. She was a lap dog who loved to be loved. If she was not in Mommys lap she was sitting eating ice cream with Daddy. She loved to play fetch and walks in the neighborhood. She took an occasional ride in Daddys boat. Although she was the only animal in the house she had many human friends especially Katie, Jimmie, Charlie, Billy and Faith. She was the joy of our life and will be sadly missed. She will remain in the hearts of many forever.

Ellie Mae (white tri color on left) was our first Basset and the reason we are so in love with this breed. We were blessed with her back in 1998. Her sister Daisy Mae joined us the same year. When Daisy was diagnosed with a slow growing cancer a few years ago and began to slow down, we fostered and adopted
Shelby from Suncoast (aka Freckles) in May 2006. Shelby and Ellie bonded quickly and became fast friends. Once again we had Bassets tearing around the house and busting through the doggy door. We were also able to hit the
Florida trails again with our two healthy hounds. We were just out a week or so ago. Ellie seemed the picture of health until last week. She woke up one morning refusing to eat and vomiting. I was worried she had eaten some laundry (two surgeries in ten years for this!). After xrays and other tests though, we came home with a possible irritable bowel diagnosis. She was worse the next morning. Her blood pressure had dropped and her heartbeat was irregular. An ultrasound revealed she had a large tumor on her heart. There was nothing we could do but help her over the bridge. We are shocked that Ellie is no longer with us. She was such a part of our daily routine from waking up the kids in the morning and getting the newspaper to cuddling at night under the covers. We have been preparing ourselves for Daisy to go first, but instead she is asleep at my feet today.
Shelby seems confused and still looks for Ellie in the morning or when it is time for a walk. She is not used to going first at things and seems a bit out of sorts. I’m sure we’ll consider adopting again once we’ve had a chance to mourn our loss. We miss you Baby Girl! Love, Mom, Dad, Jack and Kara

My heart is broken as I type this. We adopted Annabelle from Suncoast almost 5 1/2 years ago. We had to let her go to the Rainbow Bridge early in the morning on Oct.21st. She was the most special member of our family. We gave her a home and love, in return she gave us so much more. Annabelle taught me that not all dogs are bad. She brought us so much joy and love. It's amazing how the absence of a small 45 lb. dog can make a house feel achingly empty. Toby, her basset brother doesn't quite know what to do with himself without his Nannybelle...we're trying to lavish extra love and attention on him as he adjusts to life without her. He's never been alone, he's always had Annabelle. She is sorely missed and it feels as if our hearts will never heal.
We love you & we will never forget you "Nanny Girl"...

Girlfriend ATB Girlfriend" has passed, she had been battling cancer but finally succumbed. She did not suffer, but had a sudden seizure and heart attack, essentially went in her sleep. She was happy, having consumed some great meals. In an effort to keep her strength up and keep her eating, we cooked her some of her favorites smells. We actually thought she was rallying. I will include some photos.

On aug 1st,2008 we helped BOSS crossover the Rainbow Bridge. He had colasped two days before while walking with his step-doggie-sister and the local dog walking club.
His big, loving heart had devolped a tumor.
Boss was only with us 10mths and alot of his past is unknow. We took him from some well meaning, but pet parent challenged, people. They had taken him two years before from an unstable owner. The son ment to name him after The Dukes of Hazzard Roscoe Coletrains' dog,but got the wrong character name.Boss or BOSSMAN seemed to fit him well.
Boss went from an unhose broken or lease trained dog into a wonder pet in just afew weeks. He was kind with his aging step-doggie-sister and made sure she was awake for feedings or aware of going for awalk. His only crime was stealing his first toy from a visting chihuaha. His favorite thing was to give us love and laughs.
My partner and I are sending a small check to SBR and as soon as our new home is setup in Inverness, we hope to find a basset with your group.
Thanks for all your effort and work on behalf of these wonderful dogs....

Daphne ATB 7/26/08
Daphne came to live with us in December of 2005 We had to assist Daphne to the Bridge yesterday 07/26/08, due to a very aggressive cancer...Gwenie remains, as does her Rescue brother, Ringo, well and happy
No bassets could ever be loved more than those who pass through our hearts and home....she led the choir (imagine, three bassets and a miniature pincher!) on a daily basis and her songs will be missed. She tried to teach Ringo to take over the chior, but so far he hasn't sounded off.
She was beautiful on the inside and the outside and brought tremendous joy into our lives. We know she was met by the bassets and other dogs that have crossed the bridge before from our home and will be waiting with tail wagging for those that come after.
We, her family, thank each and everyone of you in Suncoast Rescue for filling our home and hearts with joy and love, now and in the days to come.
Janet, Michael, Chris, Becky, Gwenie, Ringo, Lady and sooo many others in our extended family.

Sam the man was a wonder dog! He was lost during one of the hurricanes and he finally found me! He jumped into my lap and I had the fun of driving home from Ormand Beach with a 75 lb bassett hound in my lap. A little hard! He was not going to let me sleep in the morning! He hit me in the head to tell me it is time to get up babe! It is 6 am and I am hunger! So I was being trained!
He loved women! Especially blondes! He was able to help me with my seizures because somehow he had the ability to tell when they were coming and he would attach himself to me and keep me safe. He was able to move and be happy in any neighborhood. He will be missed and loved always. He will be difficult to replace.

I wanted to let you know that Ginger crossed the Rainbow Bridge Monday. She had a recurring hematoma in her ear and was in pain. She was a beautiful girl and had a good life. I don't think she has ever had a bad thing done to her in her over 10 years. She was born blind. We had had her just over a year.

We adoped Reighly in May, 2006. She was a quirky little dog. She loved our kids, and we would frequently find our 2 year old in her kennel with her or laying on her side using her as a pillow. Whenever the kids got loud and started screaming in fun (as all kids do), Reighly seemed to think she was a kid, too, and started howling along with them. Needless to say, the walls very often rang with the sound of Reighly having fun with the kids. She was older when we adopted her, so wasn't an active dog. Occasionally the "puppy burst" would seize her, though, and she would go running around the house like it was a racetrack. One of our favorite laughs with her was the time she decided to go running, and hit the kitchen floor as I was finishing mopping...and a 56 pound Basset went skidding across the floor, trying to regain her footing, and then crashed into the pantry door. She looked at it like it had no right to be in her way.
We had to let her go on Nov. 24, 2007. She began having seizures in July of 2006, and had been on medications to control them, so has always had health problems. Nov. 23 she started refusing all food and water, and on the 24th I took her to the hospital because she was getting dehydrated. They checked her out and found a previously undetected tumor in her abdomen. Treatment was available, but 9x out of 10 it would not have worked, and would have caused her more suffering during the treatment. The kindest thing we could do was to have the doctors help her over the bridge. We brought her home so the kids could love on her and tell her goodbye, then hubby took her back to the hospital. My 4 year old has cried some, asking why God couldn't just make her better HERE instead of taking her home to Heaven, so it's been a rough few days and we all miss her terribly.
The picture is our very last picture of Reighly, taken shortly before she went over the bridge

 Sebring 4/2/90 - 10/20/07
Sebring was "rescued" by Barbra and Ken Breslauer as a puppy, who was very sick. After a week of intense medical treatment she survived and went on live over 17 years! Outgoing and smart (for a basset, anyway), Sebring made friends with everyone. A petite but athletic basset, she had to have been the fastest basset hound ever! As time went on, she battled many medical problems, but NEVER complained. When she was six, her brother "Moon Pie," arrived. Sebring let him know right away she was the boss. Now Sebring and Moon Pie are back together across the Rainbow Bridge. We will always remember Sebring with fond memories. It is so hard to say goodbye... Loved forever by Barbra and Ken Breslauer

Dear Suncoast,
Chance, Pants, Sir Chancelot, Sir Barksalot, Shorts We fostered Chance when he was 11 in August of 2005 and then adopted him. He was the sweetest dog: he loved to play "chase me, chase you" after his bath, and, as you can see from the picture with his wolf- dog brother Horatio, "hide-Chance-under-a-blanket!" He would walk around for five minutes at a time with a towel over his head.He loved to go for walks, with him way behind ,and Horatio way ahead. He loved french fries and apples, and they were the only things he would lose his manners over. He loved his beddy and got upset when I washed it; when he got a new beddy, it had to be properly cuddled before he could sleep. When we got him, he had problems holding his bladder, but within days of access to a dog door, he never had another problem. This may be why he was given away, so I want people to know that this problem in an older dog can often be helped! When Horatio couldn't walk anymore, Chance took great care of him. Horatio died in Oct 2006, then Chance went to the bridge this August.
We miss them very much. Mary K and David

Lily, ATB August 10, 2007.
Lily’s was a true rescue story. She had been rescued along with several other basset hounds from very poor conditions by Suncoast Basset Rescue. I first met Lily when SBR brought 11 hounds up from Central Florida for fostering, and she rode with me. Another of the 11 was NeHi, who was about the same age as Lily, (senior hounds) and they didn’t get along! So hounds were swapped out on the ride back. Lily went to a foster home in Alachua County, NeHi went to a foster home in the panhandle, Lily was eventually adopted by the foster home. When I did the homecheck for the adoption I said, if you ever need to give her up…call me!... I adopted NeHi, and NeHi spent her final years with the Wood House Hounds.
She grew to trust again, and enjoyed pawticipating in the White Springs Christmas parade, and the Waddle, wearing her pearls while she rode in her wagon. Her heart and soul gave out about a year later, and she went peacefully to the Rainbow Bridge, sadly missed by those she left behind.
Then, the e-mail came! Lily needed to come back to Suncoast! I adopted her on the spot and raced to pick her up… She was so white with faint markings, her coat had "aged", truly a Lily! we fell in love, she became a special part of this family – she loved to go for walks, and smell the flowers - she was slower than the other hounds, her left side feet dragged a bit, obviously some neurological damage, and her eyes became clouded, but that nose was always wiggling and sniffing! She loved to come find a doggie bed to settle down in in whichever room I sat down, and she loved snuggling up next to me on "her" side of the bed! She was so "fluffy" and soft! she got along famously with Bubba and Ethel, and "tolerated" Samantha - (like all the others!)... she and Bubba were walking partners ‘cause the others were faster! Trips to the Doggie Park were a special favorite time for her - she'd sniff sniff sniff, and smell the other dogs - she was one of the "biggest" dogs on the little dog side of the park. She eventually would come over to the people and settle at my feet watching all the activities.
She grew to love her days at the groomer beauty shop-bath, toenails, ears and glands...she came out bright white, but...as time went on, her brown and black markings returned and she was truly tri-color again. She attended two Waddles, and was the official " cheerleader" for all of the games. She loved to go on rides, long or short. Lily was 16! so much of her life was spent in poor conditions she surprised us all at how well she was doing at such an age. She started to slow down, then stopped eating. She stayed in her bed all day, except for a valiant effort to go out the doggie door. But, when the BUV loaded up the other hounds for the doggie park, she slowly, but surely, came out, wanting to go – one last time- to say goodbye to her doggie and people friends. the next day Lily sat in my lap, not moving, her eyes told me it was time to go. Selfishly, I asked her if she would stay with us just a little longer, but, it was not to be...it was time to help her go. She went peacefully to sleep off to the Rainbow Bridge leaving us with memories of the many good years she has had because she was rescued by Suncoast Basset Rescue...... be free my darling Lily....romp and play and feast and please, wait with NeHi and Lady for all the rest to come..You are so loved! Peaches ATB 6/26/07
After two short years of being with us following her adoption from Bassett Rescue, Peaches left us on June 26th. With two operations needed to remove cancerous tumors, it was a prolapsed disc in her back that finally did her in. We thank Suncoast Bassett Rescue for allowing us to share these two great years with Peaches. Not only did we spoil her with constant belly rubs, many pig ear treats and allowing her to sleep in our bed, but she also spoiled us with her unconditional love, constant affection and perfect behavior. We will miss the little things like hearing her deep bark when we came home from work, her early morning yawns that let us know it was time to get up and the way she groaned when we rubbed her ears. We will miss you Peaches. Thanks for a great two years, we sure wish we had longer to love you.

Odie was our first basset. He was the one who began our love affair with the basset breed and helped us find Suncoast. In turn he also helped us find Brandy, Jasmine, Dunker Doo, Lucy Liu, and Chrissy who we adopted from Suncoast. He initially came into our home aggressive and grouchy but after a few days he mellowed out and was a different hound. He was the love of our life, a true loving companion not only to us but also to the other hounds in our home. Not a day passes that we don’t think of Odie and miss him. His journey to the
Rainbow
Bridge has definitely left a huge hole in ours hearts. But I can envision him once again a young pup running and playing pain free at the Bridge with all our furbabies that have already arrived at the Bridge. And I know he is eagerly awaiting our arrival so we can all be reunited once again. We miss our walks and rides with Odie and all the other special times we shared with him. For a basset Odie was very obedient. We could walk him all over the neighborhood without a leash and he would stay right by our side. ![]() Miss Emma, July 1995- April 6, 2007
Emma was the picture of health for an older girl, while lurking inside, unknown to anyone was a tumor on her liver that was closing off her stomach. In a short week the day came for her to cross the bridge. she still was full of vigor; she did not want to go. Once free, I'm sure she ran across to see her brother Freddie, and her sister Mocha, but I felt her look back once to tell me it was ok. We all miss you; Basil and Papaya look for you. Wait for me there, I know we will all be together in time, and remember what I always told you......."you are the most beautiful girl in the world." Thanks Miss "M" for being you!
I will always love you,
Bob Daddy

ATB Beaudreaux
We are deeply saddened to inform you of the loss of the greatest friend anyone could ask for. Beaudreaux was a big part of our family. He was everything you could ask for in a friend. He was there for us in good and bad times. He was always there to listen, and to share a snack. All he wanted was love (which he got plenty of) and he gave us alot more. He taught us to have fun, and he really taught us how to relax. With tear filled eyes we don't say "goodbye" but go, have fun and play big fella, we'll catch up to you later. We look forward to the day we can be reunited with our great friend. So cross that Rainbow Bridge in peace, Beaudreaux we will miss you.Our family has a huge void in it now which will heal with time and plenty of pictures and memories .

Amber ATB 4/16/07
I was temporarily fostering Amber who I rescued from The St. Lucie Humane Society on behalf of Sun coast. I only rescued her on Friday 4/13/07 and she passed days later on 4/16/07. I knew she was old and had old age issues but I did not expect that she was so close to death. I want to say that although we only had the opportunity to know Amber for a few days that she touched our lives with her sweet disposition. She was so loving to our two small boys giving them bundles of kisses. We also took a few nice walks together with our 5 year old walking her in some nice, cool, South Florida air. Amber also had some deli turkey and a grilled hot dog which she seemed to like. Amber died in our house yesterday but I was petting her as I could see life slipping away from this pretty old lady. We wish you everlasting peace, dear girl. My boys take comfort that she went to dog heaven where she will be with her mommy, her babies and lots of toys. The McCarthys.

Ms. Squiggley ATB 1-19-07 Loved and Fostered by Suncoast Basset Rescue an the Holstons
Back in September, 2005, I received a call from a man stating that a friend of his went into a nursing and she had this old, blind, barking, basset that had to go. He was tired of taking care of it and cleaning up after her while his friend was in the nursing home. Oh, and by the way...his friend probably wasn't going to ever get out to see this basset again. I told him, that Suncoast would be able to help but really needed consent from the owner. He said he would get consent but in the meantime, he was going to put the dog outside. I told him I would come and get her. I met him and found this sweet, blind, lemon and white basset, in the back of his pick-up. The Holstein's offered to foster Sweet Squiggly and she quickly got adapted to their loving home.
Ms. Sweet Squiggly went to the bridge, today. Another sweet, beautiful soul touching many lives.

Peanut ATB Dec 28, 2006
Loved and missed by Patricia Marshall and Paul LeClerc
I've had Peanut since she was 3 months old. She was so unbelievable loving, demanding, and definitely her own self. Peanut live 14 yrs 8 1/2 months and I was lucky enough to have all but the first 3 months of her life. I have 14 1/2 years of great stories. Peanut had to have emergency surgery on Dec 28, 2006 for bloat, and she came thru the surgery but she didn't wake up from the anesthesia the next morning. She was ornary til the end, the doctor said that when they tried to put the tube in that she fought it. We miss her so much but she is with my other babies Scamp and Ticker. I have never heard of bloat, but apparently in barrel chested dogs like Basset Hounds, it is a common life threating problem. Please I beg all of the Basset owners out there to read up on bloat and even non Basset owners.

Clyde ATB Feb 7, 2007
Loved and missed by Patricia Marshall and Paul LeClerc
We got Clyde thru Suncoast with his bonded partner Bonnie. They were labled Ozzie and Harriet, but her foster mom, Fran, tried other names and they seem to answer to Bonnie and Clyde. Let me tell you, Clyde was a character and half. He loved to counter surf, and when we would come home from work we had to check the house to see what Clyde got into that day. We got Bonnie and Clyde the week before Easter 2006. I've never had a dog like Clyde. Paul seems to think that Bonnie is Clyde's mother but obviously we are not sure. I can't tell you how many loaves of bread he took off the counter, along with bags of dog cookies and he even went into our cabinet and got out bags of potatoes. He was a goof with a huge heart. All he wanted is to be loved and I hope that Paul and myself gave that to him. We didn't have him nearly as long as we would have liked but he will always be remembered. I just hope that he will listen to Peanut now, and have her show him the way. Clyde also had to have emergency surgery, but this time it was for fluid in his stomach. When the Doctors got in there they found cancer. We lost him Feb 7, 2007.

Bogey 10/30/98-1/29/07
Bogey was a loved basset of 8 years that just crossed over the Rainbow bridge last night 1/29/07. She will be greatly missed! Bogey was always a playful hound that loved Jason and I. Everybody that saw her feel in love with her. My husband and I rescued her when she was 1 1/2 years old in Tampa and she has been a devoted companion ever since. We have never loved a pet as much as Bogey. She always brought a smile to our face when we came home and cuddled at night in our bed. She loved to go to the park and Petsmart. She got her picture with Santa every year. Also she enjoyed going to the Sweetheart celebration. Bogey was a beautiful basset girl that we always remain in our hearts. Rest in Peace Bogey!!!

Wellington - ATB 12/15/06
MidOctober 2003 I picked up a giant (88lb), troubled dog as my first SBR foster from a lady who’d pulled him from a kill shelter. Despite the trust issues, chips on his shoulders, and other personality quirks he came into our house with, somehow Wellington managed to get his paws in my heart. I adopted him after 9 months of fostering, finally realizing he had found his forever home.
Although he would never be a lover of other people or other dogs, with us, he seemed to flourish a bit more each day. He formed a strong bond with his smallest "sister" and didn’t bat an eye at her endless grooming of him like she was a mother cat and he her kitten, loved to chew Nylabones in companionable silence with his other "sister", and was devoted to my husband & me. Wellie woke me with kisses, sat proudly on my lap whenever he could, and when he couldn’t sit on me, sat with some part of him touching me or in a place where he could be sure to watch me. A true mama’s boy.
I hope his time with us, although far too brief, helped replace any bad lingering memories of his life beforehand with ones of love, trust and companionship.
Big Dog, you'll never be forgotten.
Whitney R.

Snoopy
With much sadness, I want to inform you of Snoopy's passing last Tuesday night. Since I was a child, I adored the Basset Hound breed, and couldn't wait until I could get one. My opportunity finally came 20 months ago when my wife saw Snoopy's picture on your website. He and our Beagle Obadiah were fast friends, but it was Snoopy who always got his choice of sleeping spots. I work midnights, and often would find Snoopy here in my place when I was getting ready to go to work.
Snoopy was supposed to be 10 years old when he arrived in our family, but knowing a little something about dogs, I don't believe for a minute that he was more than 6. His passing was a surprise to us due to a mass in his spleen. Unfortunately, he was prone to strange masses, and this time surgery wasn't an option.
He wasn't with us a very long time by most standards, but he was a highly valued member of the family. Snoopy, my daughters Caitie (4) and Chloe (3) miss you very much, as do Momma and I. Obadiah is still watching out the window for you, and will be looking for you when it's his turn to cross the bridge. You were a wonderful dog, and caused me to fall in love with Bassets more than ever. Thank you for all the memories, cuddles, and Baroooooooos. I'll miss that wonderful voice of yours the most.
Big Puppy, I'll never forget you, and I still love you, Nolan

Sammy ATB 10/17/06
Today Sammy past over the rainbow bridge and while it was very hard for me to see..I know that my doggie is happier and pain free. Sammy came into my life 2 years ago when I adopted him from Suncoast. Although we didn't have much time together he was a very important part of my life. He was a great dog! He loved the kids and was always excited to see other friends(dogs). Whether at the dog park or on a walk at the lake, Sammy always brought lots of attention wtih his adorable looks and his friendly attitude. His favorite things were hotdogs, chasing the silly cats across the street, playing with his brother Lucky, and naps! Sammy, mommy loves you and I will never forget how wonderful of a pet(child) you were.

Kyser- ATB 8/2/06
To all:
Four years ago this month, a very special hound came into my life. His name was Kyser, and he was a tan and white basset. An older hound when he came into your rescue, he stole my heart. I knew that I could make his last years loving and warm, and so he came home with me. Unfortunately, last Wednesday, on 8/2/06 at 11:00 PM, he crossed the Rainbow bridge. He was thought to be nine when he came into my life, and I knew that we would not have enough time left. He was such a special hound, he loved everyone, including cats. His favorite thing to do, besides sleep on the bed with me, was to go out and see the cows and roll in cow poop! Such a wonderful hound. While I wish he had come into my life sooner, I am not sorry that he was here for the short time he was. I really loved him, and he was my best friend. I will miss him.
But thank you for running this rescue. It is a wonderful thing that you are doing.

Bentley
Bentley was my baby for 71/2 years. He was my first rescue and it was his love for me that got me interested in the breed. It is because of Bentley's undying love and devotion for me and mine for him that I am now a foster mother for other rescues. Play at the bridge Bentley until the day that I can join you again. I will always love you.

Vinnie ATB 4/12/06
Let me tell you about my friend, Vinnie. Although he and I only spent about 5 hours together, we had some times I'll always remember. When I picked Vinnie up, he was handed to me by the employee, and he said, “Heres your old antique”. I looked at Vinnie as he wagged his tail and I said to the employee , “Well, we're leaving the retirement home and going to a better place”. Vinnie didn’t come to us with a name. I decided to call him Vinnie as he had a very handsome and strong face and he looked like he was a smooth character in his day. Doesn’t everyone need a friend named Vinnie? I took him to my work for a few hours until he would be transported to his foster home. He immediately rolled his face all over the carpet in my office and did what bassets do best- rolled on his back and wiggled around! I gave him belly rubs but tried to be gentle as he was very frail. He spent the next few hours walking around and barking at the train that would pass my office. He walked in and out of the backyard taking in life and smelling the fresh air. After a few hours passed he was picked up by his foster poppa, Lee, and spent his last hours with him and a new basset friend. He literally took his last breath and died peacefully...on a soft comfortable fluffy bed, knowing he was loved.
Rest peacefully Vinnie!
