FOREVER FOSTER GUARDIANS
Become a Forever Foster Guardian for a Special Hound
At Suncoast Basset Rescue, most of our hounds are lucky enough to find their forever homes—but some need a different kind of forever. These are our Forever Fosters—special hounds who, due to age, medical needs, or behavioral challenges, will never be adopted but instead remain in loving foster homes for the rest of their lives.
You can make a lasting difference in their lives and help give them the second chance they deserve by becoming a Forever Foster Guardian through a monthly or one-time sponsorship donation. Your generous gift will help cover the cost of ongoing medical care, prescription diets, and all the love they need to thrive in their permanent foster homes.
Your support ensures these Forever Fosters live out their days with dignity, comfort, and endless belly rubs.
You can’t change their past - but you can give them a beautiful forever. Be their Guardian today.
OUR FOREVER FOSTERS
LUCY
Meet Lucy, a sweet senior Basset Hound who’s around 13 years old. Lucy has had a tough life. She was found as a stray when she was about 3-4 years old, in poor condition and likely a victim of abuse. Thankfully, she was rescued and spent over 9 years with a loving family. However, when the family had a toddler, they realized Lucy, who is sensitive about being touched in certain areas, might not be comfortable with the new situation, and they made the difficult decision to surrender her to Suncoast Basset Rescue.
Lucy is a timid and anxious dog, particularly in new situations, and she was recently diagnosed with glaucoma in one eye. Fortunately, eye surgery hasn’t been needed yet, but her condition will be monitored. Given her age and her gentle, reserved nature, we believe Lucy is best suited to live out her remaining years in the quiet comfort of her foster home, where she is now a permanent member of the SBR family as a forever foster. You can still help Lucy by becoming a Forever Foster Guardian and helping provide for Lucy’s continuing love and care.
DAISY
Meet Daisy, a sweet and resilient basset hound who we believe to be around 8 years old, though we can’t say for sure since she was found as a stray near the woods in a rural area. It's clear that she may have been on her own for some time before being rescued because she was loaded with fleas, pretty skinny and she was not yet spayed. Despite her rough past, Daisy’s spirit remains as joyful as ever. Her foster mom describes her as the sweetest basset she's ever known, with a wagging tail and plenty of kisses for everyone she meets.
Not long after coming to SBR, Daisy faced a medical scare that landed her at the vet, followed by a trip to UF Vet Med Hospital, where she was diagnosed with diabetes and a severe UTI. Since then her foster mom continues working closely with the veterinary team to get her blood sugar levels stabilized. This has been a work in progress with trips to the vet every 2 weeks for glucose monitoring. In addition, Daisy receives a special prescription food specially formulated to help control her diabetes. This is helping Daisy to gain a few, much needed, pounds. If you would like to help with supporting Daisy and her continued care please consider becoming a Forever Foster Guardian. By doing so you will be helping to ensure that she remains safe, happy, and well-cared for in her forever home.
PURTY
Purty is a beautiful 10 year old bassador who spent her first nine years living as an only dog with a yard to play in and her human mom to love. When her mom could no longer care for her, Purty’s peaceful life was upended. She has landed on her feet with SBR and is thriving with her foster family but, as they say, it’s all just been a lot.
Purty is very smart and has adapted quickly to a totally different lifestyle by watching and learning. She’s quite expressive, with a cute grumble that she uses to ask to go out. Purty loves to play ball and catch with her toys and is a quick study for basic instructions.
As the queen of her prior castle, Purty never really had to learn the give and take of getting along with other dogs – or men, for that matter. She is doing great with her foster sibling, Elvis and even got upset being separated from him when Elvis needed to spend the day at the vet. Love and patience will go far in allowing this sweet girl’s personality to shine. We have decided that it is in Purty’s best interest to make her part of our Forever Foster program due to how difficult it is for her when things change in her life and because of how well she has adjusted to life with her foster family. Please consider helping Purty by becoming one of SBR’s Forever Foster Guardians.
BAILEY
Bailey is a sweet, small Basset mix who has a heart as big as her gentle soul. This precious senior girl came to Suncoast Basset Rescue when her family brought home a new baby, and unfortunately, they couldn’t keep her. When she arrived, Bailey had numerous open sores, and after a visit to the vet, she was diagnosed with advanced melanoma. Due to the stage of her condition, Bailey has become a Forever Foster with us. She will spend her remaining days surrounded by love and care in her foster home, where she’s pampered and adored. Bailey is a true sweetheart—she welcomes all the other SBR fosters into her home with open paws, always showing kindness and affection. Though her time with us is limited because the cancer continues to spread, Bailey's spirit is as strong as ever, and we’re so grateful for the opportunity to give her the love she deserves. Please consider supporting Bailey by becoming one of SBR’s Forever Foster Guardians.
ROCKY
Rocky is a very special 10-year-old basset hound with a heart as big as his floppy ears. He came into Suncoast Basset Rescue’s care after being surrendered to a local vet by his former owner, who couldn’t afford treatment for a serious back injury. At that time, Rocky had limited use of his back legs and painful sores from dragging them behind him. The veterinarian reached out to us, and we immediately stepped in to help. Rocky was diagnosed with a bulging disc, and after careful evaluation, surgery was recommended. We were told he was a good candidate, so we moved forward with the procedure. In his loving foster home, Rocky underwent surgery to repair the herniated disc, followed by months of dedicated physical and hydrotherapy. Thanks to his incredible spirit and the care he received, Rocky has regained muscle strength and full use of his legs!
Though he now moves freely and enjoys life again, Rocky must avoid jumping on or off furniture or in and out of cars to protect his back. Because of his medical history and ongoing needs, we decided Rocky would remain with his foster family as a Forever Foster—a place where he is safe, happy, and deeply loved.
Recently, during a routine wellness check, Rocky was diagnosed with lymphoma, an aggressive form of cancer. While it can't be cured, his foster family and SBR are committed to providing him with the best palliative care possible—keeping him comfortable and surrounded by love for however long he has.
Rocky is a sweet, gentle soul who gets along wonderfully with other dogs and brings joy to everyone he meets. You can support his journey by becoming a Forever Foster Guardian and helping us cover the cost of his ongoing care.
RUSTY
Rusty is a strikingly handsome, sweet, and active 14-year-old basset hound who holds a special place in the Suncoast Basset Rescue family as one of our beloved Forever Fosters. Despite facing some medical and behavioral challenges, Rusty is thriving in the care of his dedicated foster family. He has allergies that require prescription food and regular allergy shots to keep him comfortable. He also deals with food aggression, but his experienced foster family understands his needs and ensures he feels safe, supported, and loved every day.
Rusty has been with his foster family for many years now, and it’s clear he’s exactly where he belongs. SBR is proud to stand by Rusty, covering all of his medical expenses so he can continue enjoying his golden years in the place he calls home.
Through our Forever Foster program, we make sure that dogs like Rusty receive the long-term care and stability they deserve. Your support helps make this possible.
SHELBY
Meet Shelby, a sweet and resilient 8-year-old basset who has faced a difficult past but is now surrounded by the love and care of her SBR foster family. For much of her life, she lived outdoors, tied up with minimal medical attention. She arrived at the rescue covered in fleas but has quickly adapted to the comfort of indoor life. Despite these challenges, Shelby has quickly learned to trust her foster family, and she absolutely adores people.
Shelby is heartworm positive and has been undergoing the slow-kill treatment. She has also been experiencing another major health issue of bloody stools, that has not resolved despite undergoing several treatment plans. It was decided that it was necessary to schedule her endoscopy to determine the root cause, if possible, of the bleeding. The diagnosis revealed an anal adenoma, thankfully benign, though it is located too far up to be surgically removed. This will be something that will be continually monitored and most likely will cause more serious medical issues for her. After careful consideration, SBR has decided to make Shelby a forever foster, where she will receive ongoing medical care and continue to live in the comfort and safety of her loving foster family. Shelby’s journey may not have been easy, but with the support of her dedicated foster family, she will enjoy the rest of her life in peace and happiness.
LUCY
My name is Lucy, and I’m 14 years young. I may not come running when you call my name—please don’t take it personally! I’m about 90% deaf, which honestly comes in handy when my doggy siblings start barking and I’m trying to enjoy a nap. My foster dad calls me a “tiny basset,” and at just 25 pounds, I think he might be right! I may be small, but I have a huge heart and love nothing more than snuggling up with someone I trust.
When I first came to SBR, I had to have my tail amputated due to a large cancerous growth at the base. Thankfully, the vet was able to remove all the cancer! I do have some ongoing issues with itchy skin, and occasional ear troubles. I also sometimes have accidents in the house, which I get some medication for now that helps but my foster dad takes wonderful care of me. Because of my age and my special medical needs, I’ll be staying with him for the rest of my life as a cherished forever foster. Suncoast Basset Rescue will continue to support all of my medical care, so I can stay happy and comfortable in the loving home I deserve. You can help too by becoming a Forever Foster Guardian.
ZOEY
Zoey is a lovable 11-year-old senior basset hound who was rescued by Suncoast Basset Rescue. While she’s a sweet and gentle soul, Zoey is in need of shedding a few pounds to help improve her overall health. Thankfully, her foster dad takes his pack on daily walks, and he’s gradually increasing her exercise to help her get in better shape at a comfortable pace. Zoey also faces some challenges with incontinence, which is common in older dogs. Given her age and medical needs, we believe Zoey would thrive best in her foster home for the remainder of her life. Suncoast Basset Rescue will continue to provide for her medical care, ensuring she lives out her golden years surrounded by love and comfort. You can help support Zoey by becoming a Forever Foster Guardian.
SNICKERS
Snickers is 14 years old, and he came to SBR as a bonded pair with a female named Kelly. They both came from a bad situation and because of this Snickers is very fearful of strangers. At times, mere eye contact can scare him. His foster family is very sensitive to his anxiety and have learned to work around his quirks. He is also taking an anti anxiety medication to help him. Snickers has grown very fond of his foster dad and will jump on the bed to lay down next to him. Snickers loves to go for his daily walks with his foster pack. His foster parents must be very careful in public with him because he tends to be a runner and will try to pull out of his collar. While he loves his pack, until recently, Snickers and Kelly found comfort with each other. They even ate together out of the same food bowl! Snickers is another one of SBR’s forever foster and is so far, doing well since Kelly crossed the bridge. You can help Snickers by becoming a Forever Foster Guardian. Your monthly or one-time donation will help cover the ongoing costs of keeping /snickers with a loving family that will continue to shower him with love and provide him with the security he needs.
HENRY
I’m Henry! I’m a senior boy and a forever foster with Suncoast Basset Rescue. I suffer from separation anxiety and thunderstorm anxiety. I’m not too fond of fireworks either. I’m very afraid when I’m left home alone and will do anything to try to find my people. My former family could not be home with me all the time, nor could they take me with them everywhere. It was hard for them to give me up but they knew that it was best for me. Now I live with my foster family and numerous other basset hound siblings. There is always someone home with me and I’m a very happy camper. My foster dad is building my confidence to help me overcome my fears of being alone. My humans can run errands for short periods of time now because I know they will be back shortly. I’ve been told that I’m super sweet and give great kisses. Because of my severe anxiety, I will stay with my foster family forever. You can help with my care by becoming a Forever Foster Guardian.
DAPHNE
Eleven-year-old Daphne was dropped at a small shelter, but the shelter knew she needed serious attention and placed a call to SBR. She was covered with fleas and ticks and tested positive for heartworm. Due to the heavy heartworm infestation, Daphne’s heart and pulmonary artery were enlarged and she became a Forever Foster. Her foster mom describes her as a bit of diva. She loves plush toys and always has one in her mouth. Daphne is very loving with a gentle demeanor. As a Forever Foster, she will have a wonderful loving home and continue to receive the ongoing medical care she needs. If you’d like to help Daphne, please become a monthly donor as a Forever Foster Guardian.
ANGEL
I’m Angel, a very sweet 15 year old that was taken in by Suncoast Basset Rescue when my family couldn’t care for me anymore. They thought I might have basset hound in me but that is questionable. Regardless, I needed help and SBR was there for me. I love to sleep in bed, and I like to get under the covers for warmth. My foster mom calls me her “little burrito” because I like to wrap myself up in the covers. I may snore a bit but my foster mom thinks it’s adorable. She also says I’m a doll and so easy to fall in love with probably because I love to cuddle and be near her. When I first arrived at my foster home, I was missing quite a bit of hair in several places, so I received medicated baths and some allergy meds for relief. After the great care from my foster mom & SBR, I look and feel so much better and although I do have some skin issues from time to time, I try to eat a healthy diet and that seems to help me. At my most recent wellness exam, some of my kidney values have changed so the vet recommended I start a new prescription diet. I think it is very yummy. Because of my age, skin issues and being in my current foster home for such a long time SBR has made me a forever foster. I will stay with my foster mom and my foster brothers for the rest of my life where I will be loved and cared for.
EROS
Suncoast Basset Rescue received an urgent plea from a county shelter about a 12-year-old basset mix—lovingly known as a "bagel"—who had been found as a stray. No one came forward to claim him, and the shelter knew that he was not in the best of health. He was heartworm positive and facing a long list of medical challenges. We knew we couldn’t let him spend another night in the shelter. In honor of his arrival just after Valentine’s Day, we named him Eros, after the Greek god of love—and it fits him perfectly. Now a cherished Forever Foster with SBR, Eros is enjoying the warmth and comfort of a loving foster home. Despite his medical issues—including an enlarged prostate and liver, elevated kidney values, and a special prescription kidney diet—Eros remains a happy and gentle soul. He’s in the best hands, and we are committed to making sure he knows only love and comfort for the rest of his days.
You can help Eros by becoming a Forever Foster Guardian. Your support ensures that our senior and medically fragile hounds receive the care and dignity they deserve.
