Adopting a Basset

Thank you for making the decision to rescue a basset. There are several important steps in the process to get you a hound from Suncoast Basset Rescue. We put a lot of time and effort in making sure that every home that an SBR dog goes to is safe, loving, understanding and committed. We want to make sure that these dogs go to the best possible and final forever home, to give them a second chance to live as they were intended: as someone’s best friend.

For the basset, the adoption process begins when we rescue the dog from abusive, abandoned, and unwanted situations.  As SBR is a foster-based rescue serving every county in Florida, a newly rescued dog is placed into a foster family which provides the care individualized to each dog’s needs.  It is within the foster family support system that each hound is medically and behaviorally assessed and cleared – medical conditions treated including urgent medical care, spaying, neutering, vaccinating and behavioral challenges are addressed with training or other techniques.  All resulting in a hound ready for adoption.

For the adopter, the adoption process begins with the submission of your completed adoption application.  An SBR adoption coordinator will timely contact you and coordinate the process of  getting you approved and finding the right match dog.  We work with you to understand your current situation i.e., current dogs or cats, dog/basset experience, what you are looking for in a basset. We contact your veterinarian and conduct a home visit. All of this is done to find each hound’s best match.  As many of the bassets we help have had rough lives, we do everything possible to ensure they are going to their final forever home. After placement, we provide post-adoption follow up to address any questions or concerns about your new basset.

Covering the expenses associated with rescue and rehabilitation helps us maintain a strong foster network and increase positive outcomes for bassets in need, Suncoast asks that you donate at the time of adoption as follows:

Puppy (under 1 year old) $525

Adult (1 year to 8 years) $400

Senior (9 years and up) $200

Special Needs $100

Thank you for considering adopting from Suncoast Basset Rescue.
